Grading Students will be assessed in three different areas: Habits of Work and Learning (HOWLS), Homework, and Academic Proficiency.
Habits of Work and Learning (HOWLS) Students will be assessed regularly on their effort and conduct in class. This portion of their report card will be based on respect, responsibility, perseverance and work ethic. Please see the HOWLS rubric for more details.
Homework Assignments will be given regularly each week. Most assignments require about 20 to 45 minutes to complete. The intent of homework is to practice the skills introduced during class lessons and activities. Homework assignments are for student self assessment, and are most often corrected in class on their due date. Students are responsible for correcting mistakes and seeking help when needed. Question and answer sessions are built into class lessons and extra help is always available upon request. Homework habits will be recorded in PowerSchool for completeness and correctness.
Academic Proficiency Formative and Summative Assessments: There will be formative check-ins during each chapter, and students will be formally assessed to demonstrate proficiency in the skills and content taught at the end of each unit. Study Guides are given 5 days or more in anticipation of unit tests. Students are also given a list of other resources to use as study material for each test.
Math Points: Math Points are mainly earned by mastering assigned activities through Buzzmath.com. For every gold star earned on Buzzmath a student receives 10 math points. Students can only earn points by completing the activities that I have assigned them through Buzzmath, not just any activity of their choice! By the end of the trimester each student must earn 100 math points or more (10 gold stars). Students must pace themselves throughout the trimester by doing a little bit of work each week on Buzzmath to avoid an overload of work toward the end of each trimester.
